Microwave cooking guidelines on; partially microwaving food, paying carefull attention to cooking guidelines, food covering and what to use.


When partially microwaving food to finish cooking on the grill or in a conventional oven, transfer the microwaved food to the other heat source immediately. Never partially cook food and store it for later use.

Always follow the guidelines on the packaging when cooking or reheating meals in your microwave, including any advice about stirring the food or leaving it to stand. If microwave-cooking guidelines are not provided, consult the microwave manufacturer's instructions.

Keep food covered while cooking to promote steaming. Try waxed paper, microwave-safe plastic wrap or a lid (this helps to keep the moisture in and prevents dryness). Also, allow space for steam to escape.

Use only microwave-safe containers. Check containers for labels indicating 'microwave-safe.' If you are unsure whether the container is microwave-safe, put the empty container in the microwave with a cup of tap water. Microwave it on high power for one minute, then check the temperature of the container by carefully feeling the dish.

If the container stays cool, it is microwave-safe. Slightly warm containers can be used for reheating only and hot dishes should not be placed in the microwave again. Dishes containing metal are usually not suitable.
