Microwave Radiation
Microwave radiation is electromagnetic radiation is in the frequency range of 300 MHz - 300 gigahertz (GHz). Microwave radiation is non-ionizing in that there is insufficient energy to ionize atoms. The primary health effect of microwave radiation energy is a result of heating. The absorption microwave energy varies with frequency. Microwave radiation is absorbed near the skin.
Exposure standards of western countries are based on preventing thermal problems. However, research continues on possible 'non-thermal' effects. Use of microwave radiation includes: radios, processing and cooking of foods and microwave drying equipment.
Food cooked in a microwave oven does not present a radiation risk. Microwave oven doors are designed with at least two features, which ensure that power is cut off immediately the door is opened. Microwaves cease to exist as soon as the power to the magnetron of a microwave oven is switched off. They do not remain in the food and are incapable of making either it or the oven radioactive.
Correctly used, microwave ovens offer a convenient and safe method of food preparation, without any detrimental effects on consumer safety or nutrition.
